Introduction: Remembering the Heartbeat Behind the Work
A friend of mine, a children’s pastor, shared how God spoke to her heart, asking, “Am I your very best friend?” This question called her out of comfort and into ministry that was scary but Kingdom-building.
Sometimes, in ministry or life, we get so caught up in the work that we forget the why—the love behind it all.
Jesus asked Peter three times, “Do you love me?” before telling him to “Feed my sheep.” The call isn’t about the work first—it’s about the relationship.
Point 1: Love Is the Foundation of Our Service
John 21:15-17
Jesus asked Peter three times, “Do you love me?” and then said, “Feed my lambs… Take care of my sheep.”
Jesus wanted Peter’s heart before His hands. Ministry without love becomes mechanical and empty.
Burnout often happens because we forget to keep our hearts connected to Jesus—our very best friend.
Point 2: Beware Losing Your First Love
Revelation 2:4-5
“You have forsaken the love you had at first… Repent and do the things you did at first…”
Ministry is not just obligation—it’s an outflow of passion for Jesus.
If we lose that first love—the spark that got us started—we lose our purpose and endurance.
Point 3: Remember Your First Love with God
Jeremiah 2:1-5
God reminds His people how they once loved Him deeply—even through hard places.
But they drifted, chasing idols and becoming “worthless” because they left the love behind.
Like Israel, we can get distracted or tired and lose our devotion—not because God changed, but because we stopped seeking Him with a full heart.
Point 4: Love Because He Loved Us First
1 John 4:7-21
“Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God… God is love.”
True love flows from knowing God’s love for us.
We can’t hate others and claim to love God.
Our love for God must show up in love for others and in authentic living.

Think about when you first met your spouse—the butterflies, the sparkle, the joy.
Over time, love matures and deepens, but sometimes it cools or fades if neglected.
Our love for God follows a similar pattern. We must nurture it daily to keep it alive.
Point 5: Love Rooted in God Produces Fruit
Jesus said a tree is known by its fruit. If we are rooted in genuine love for God, the fruit of the Spirit will flow naturally.
Love is the heartbeat behind faithful ministry and joyful service—not mere duty or performance.
Closing Challenge: Is God Your Very Best Friend?
If God is truly your best friend, your ministry and your life will flow from that relationship.
Trust Him with your heart.
Lean into that love.
Let it fuel your purpose, your service, and your endurance.
