Text: Romans 5:6–8
Theme: God doesn’t love a future version of you—He loves you now, as you are.
Introduction
Have you ever felt like you’re never enough for God?
Like you’re always falling short?
Like God’s watching you with a holy clipboard, just marking down your failures?
I’ve been there—reading my Bible, praying, worshiping—but still feeling unworthy.
Maybe you’re carrying that weight today. Because if the enemy can’t get you to leave God, he’ll convince you God left you.
But here’s the truth: God’s love is unconditional. It’s not a reward for the righteous, but a gift for the broken.
Point 1: His Love Came First
📖 Romans 5:6 — “At just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.”
He didn’t wait for you to get it all together.
He loved you before you could love Him back—before the addiction, the failure, the “yes” to Jesus.
Illustration:
Think of a parent holding a newborn baby. The baby can’t do anything impressive—they cry, sleep, and make messes—yet the parent loves them completely.
Why? Because love doesn’t require performance—it requires connection.
You’re not chasing God’s love; you’re responding to love that already chased you.
Point 2: His Love Covered Our Worst
📖 Romans 5:8 — “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Not after repentance. Not after clean-up. While we were still sinners—angry, addicted, ashamed.
God didn’t die for your Instagram version—He died for the real you.
Illustration: The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11–32)
- The son demands his inheritance, leaves, wastes it all.
- Hits rock bottom feeding pigs, filled with shame.
- Decides to return, rehearses an apology.
- But his father sees him from afar, runs, embraces him, and throws a party—without waiting for the apology.
Love outran shame.
Point 3: His Love Doesn’t Let Go
📖 Romans 8:38-39 — “Nothing will separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Not your past, mistakes, or failures.
God’s love is strong, unshakable, relentless.
You don’t scare or surprise God. You don’t have to earn what’s already given.
Bonus: The Older Brother’s Struggle
(Luke 15:25–32)
The older brother stayed and obeyed but felt forgotten and bitter when the party was thrown for the prodigal.
God says to you, “You are always with Me, and all I have is yours.”
If you’re trying to earn grace after salvation, God’s telling you:
You don’t have to fight for grace. You already have it.
Closing Challenge
What are you still trying to earn that Jesus already paid for?
You don’t have to prove you’re worthy—He proved it on the cross.
When shame knocks this week, say:
“I’m not who I was. I’m not what I did. I’m not what I feel. I am loved by God… and He loved me anyway.”
