Sermon Summary: The God Who Sees Me
Text: Genesis 16:1–14
Introduction:
(Hold your phone as you begin)
Have you ever sent someone a text and they just left you on read?
You know they saw it… the typing bubbles appeared… but then nothing.
Just silence.
It hurts to be seen but not acknowledged. Makes you feel invisible, like you don’t matter.
Some of us feel that way in life, too.
We show up. We try. We pray. We cry.
And it feels like no one notices.
Maybe you’ve been praying for weeks, months, or years. Holding on silently.
Wondering, “Did God leave me on read?”
Today, I want to tell you about a God who sees you—really sees you.
Text Background: Genesis 16:1–14
Hagar was a servant, not the main character. Not part of the promise. But God stepped into her story and changed everything.
Point 1: GOD SEES YOU IN THE WILDERNESS
“The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert…” (v.7)
- Hagar was used and discarded. She ran into the wilderness.
- Maybe you’ve felt pushed out, cast aside, or hurt by those who should protect you.
- But God knows exactly where you are.
- He doesn’t miss you in the crowd.
- The angel found her — on purpose.
Point 2: GOD SPEAKS IDENTITY IN THE STRUGGLE
“Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” (v.8)
- God calls her by name—Hagar—not just “servant” or “slave.”
- Everyone else labeled her, but God knows her personally.
- God restores her identity and gives her a promise about her future.
- You may feel invisible to people, but you are valuable to God.
- You are called, known, and named by Him.
Point 3: GOD REVEALS HIMSELF PERSONALLY
“She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me.’” (v.13)
- Hagar was the first to name God El Roi — The God who sees me.
- Not a distant observer, but one who meets us in our wilderness and pain.
- God sees your silent tears and meets you where you are.
- When you have nothing left, God still shows up and reveals His love and restoration.
Application:
Where have you come from? Where are you going?
Maybe you are:
- Rejected by people you trusted
- Hurt by church
- Battling depression
- Holding your family together alone
- Living with a smile but dying inside
El Roi is here today. The God who sees you in the crowd, in the desert, in your tears.
Altar Moment:
The Holy Spirit is calling you to be seen again. Not in shame, but in healing.
- Come forward if you want to meet God’s gaze afresh.
- Lift your hands and say, “You see me, Lord.”
- Or quietly whisper it right where you are.
Because the One who sees you… loves you deeply.
Closing Thought:
You are not invisible.
You are not forgotten.
You are not overlooked.
He is El Roi—The God Who Sees You.
And that is enough.
